ABOUT SUMMIT4STEMCELL:

More than three million people in the United States, and 30 million more worldwide, have a neuro- logical disorder. At The Scripps Research Institute and Scripps Clinic we have made extraordinary progress in finding ways to help these pat- ients with non-embryonic stem cells. We are now moving into the final stages preparing for human trials to help us reverse the devastating effects of Parkinson’s disease using patients’ own cells. We are con- fident that our success will pave the way for curing many other untreatable disorders. We need your help to make this vision become reality.

How it works:

Shinya Yamanaka, PhD, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2012 for his discovery that activating a set of genes in any adult cell type can convert them into pluripotent stem cells. These cells are called induced pluripotent stem cells and have been “repro- grammed” to behave just like embryonic stem cells, but no embryonic tissue is needed.

In about 50 days, patient stem cells differentiateinto dopaminergic neurons, creating beautiful neural networks

We have converted skin cells from our Parkinson’s dis- ease patients into stem cells, then developed them into the same dopaminergic neu- rons lost in their brains through the course of the disease. These new cells are perfect for use as a cell therapy. Since they are made from a patient’s own cells, they can be transplanted into the same patient without rejection. The same tech-nique could be used to treat other disorders such as diabetes and heart disease.
